Nava Lubelski – “My embroidery work explores
the contradictory activities of spoiling and mending,
using a process of hand-stitching over stains, spills
and rips. The marks are either found on ruined
linens and canvas or are approached after a
process of first giving vent to the impulse to
destroy, tearing holes and spilling inks onto a pristine
canvas.”

Orly Cogan – WARNING: Very Strong Sexual
Content – from the Artist Statement: “The
tableaux I create are inspired by relationships. They
evolve from the personal mythologies of my
memories…I am drawn to the space between
dichotomies, such as soft and tough, dirty and
clean, fantasy and reality, especially as they relate
to gender. My work explores common feminine
archetypes and stereotypes…In the process, I
aim to provoke certain questions…I hope to ask
all this within the context of constantly
shifting boundaries that define our relationships
and our identities.

What a crazy list! How did you find all these??
What a crazy list! How did you find all these??
Pam,
Clearly, sometimes I have way too much time on my hands also - grin.
Insane.
.....although I happened to see a few of Nava's "stain" embroideries at the McColl center this summer in Charlotte NC. One of them was captivatingly delicate and beautiful. None of the pictures at her site seem to be that way.
Lyric, I think its interesting that someone sees a stain and thinks "This could be inspirational" while I on the other hand would only see something that needed to be cleaned or thrown away.
I'd really be interested in knowing if it just started out as a "gimmick" or if she perceived it as the potential for art from the outset.
